Are Johnson County Court Records Public?

Yes. Access to court records in Texas is granted by common law, a combination of trial and appellate court rulings. Unlike in other states, court records in Texas are not subject to the regional open records law, the Public Information Act.

However, court record custodians cannot release information that the PIA, any other state law or court rule, or any federal regulation designates as confidential. Some of these restricted records include social security numbers, credit card numbers, child custody information, mental health data, identities of confidential informants and certain abuse victims, juvenile proceedings, and sealed court cases.

County Courts at Law Records

There are two County Courts at Law under the Johnson County Court. Their criminal jurisdiction covers Class A and Class B misdemeanors, while for civil cases, they share jurisdiction with the District Courts in matters where the disputed amount is between $200 and $250,000. These courts also exclusively handle eminent domain cases and can hear appeals from justice of the peace courts.

Justice of the Peace Courts Records

Four Justices of the Peace Courts hear Class C misdemeanor cases and civil matters worth up to $20,000 in Johnson County. Members of the public can contact the office of the specific Justice of the Peace who handled the case to view or obtain records.

Municipal Court Records
